Routing rules

NOTE: See the
Networking
section in the User manual of your router for further information on this subject.
Routing rules consist of a set of criteria determining the path that data packets take from the source to destination across one or more networks. Routing rules are a fundamental aspect of networking, playing a crucial role in determining how data is transmitted between devices on a network.
Once a remote VPN connection is established, the devices connected to LAN 1 become immediately reachable. Instead, the devices connected to LAN 2 are accessible only upon routing rule configuration through
FactoryTalk Remote Access Manager
.

Configuration

To create, modify and cancel static routing rules through
FactoryTalk Remote Access Manager
, access
Explorer
Domain view
and select a device on the left pane. Then, select
Routing rules
on the right pane and click on the
circled plus
button.
The
Create routing rule
window shows up. It includes three fields:
  1. Subnet IP
: The subnet that you wish to reach.
  2. Subnet Mask
: The mask of the subnet that you wish to reach.
  3. Gateway IP
: The gateway to which any requests to access a specific subnet are forwarded.
You can associate a number of routing rules to a device.
Routing Rules are visible only if applied to a device to which the user is connected, and if a VPN connection is established.
Routing rules are visible in the
Interactive Access
Connection
other than in the
Routing rules
section of the right pane of the
FactoryTalk Remote Access Manager
.
In the example shown, one static routing rules has been applied.
NOTE: When a VPN connection is no longer active, the added routing rules are automatically deleted.

Example

To allow the computer that provides remote assistance through
FactoryTalk Remote Access Manager
to reach endpoints 4, 5 or 6, configure a routing rule as follows:
  • Subnet IP: 10.65.0.0
  • Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
  • Gateway IP: 192.168.11.113
