Connect FactoryTalk Design Studio to FactoryTalk Remote Access

Connect FactoryTalk Design Studio to FactoryTalk Remote Access

FactoryTalk Design Studio uses a custom FactoryTalk Remote Access user named
FTDS
to communicate to on-premises devices through FactoryTalk Remote Access endpoints. To confirm this user’s configuration, see Enable FactoryTalk Remote Access for FactoryTalk Design Studio. Access to the Build and Deploy Center requires the Engineer role. To modify communication configuration, a FactoryTalk Design Studio Core entitlement is required.
To connect FactoryTalk Design Studio to FactoryTalk Remote access, once the FactoryTalk Remote Access configuration is complete:
  1. With a controller added to your project, (see Add a controller), go to the
    Deployment Center
to set the path to the controller.
  2. Select the hamburger menu in the path field. The
    Set Device Path
    screen appears.
The list of drivers on this screen is common to all users and all FactoryTalk Design Studio projects in your FactoryTalk Hub organization.
  3. Select the plug icon to configure a new driver. The
    Configure Drivers
    screen appears.
  4. The
    Available Driver Types
    shown should be
    FactoryTalk Remote Access (VPN)
    . Select
    Add New
    . The
    Change the VPN Endpoint
screen appears and shows the FactoryTalk Remote Access endpoints that have
    FTDS
    user permissions assigned to them.
  5. Select the FactoryTalk Remote Access endpoint or device to which you want to connect. The on-premises controller must have a network connection to this endpoint to be visible to FactoryTalk Design Studio.
  6. The default discovery method for a new VPN connection is
    Device List/Range
. To use this method, you must add a specific IP address or range of IP addresses in the
    Device List/Range
field of this dialog box. If these addresses are not known or you prefer an automatic discovery, change the Discovery Method to
    Broadcast
. Broadcast discovery finds all available controllers connected to the selected endpoint.
  7. Click
    OK
to add your new endpoint. You are returned to the
    Configure Drivers
    screen.
  8. Select
    Close.
Your new endpoint now appears in the
    Set device path
list and is available to all projects within your organization.
  9. Right-click on the endpoint and select
    Connect
from the menu which appears. This establishes an active connection to the FactoryTalk Remote Access VPN endpoint, and a list of all available controllers connected to that endpoint appears.
  10. Once connected, expand the list to see available controllers.
  11. Highlight the controller whose path you want to set and select
    OK
to set the path. You can now connect to and deploy to your controller from FactoryTalk Design Studio.
FactoryTalk Design Studio is now configured to communicate through your FactoryTalk Remote Access endpoint, and you’ve set your on-premises controller path.
