Use drag-and-drop to move items in Controller Organizer
You can use drag-and-drop to move items in the
Controller Organizer
. Moving an item in the Controller Organize
r has two effects.- It changes the scheduling of a moved program, routine, or task.
- If there are any descendant programs under a moved program (defined in theLogical Organizer), the descendant programs are not moved with the item in theController Organizer.
Moving an item in the
Controller Organizer
has no effect on the logical model in the Logical Organizer
.These items do not support drag-and-drop functionality:
- Controller Tags
- Program Parameters and Local Tags
- All plain folders (for example the Tasks or Motion Groups)
- Predefined data types
- Module-Defined data types
- Add-On-Defined data types
- The backplane under the I/O configuration
- The Logical Organizer link
The table shows which items you can drag to which targets.
Items that can be dragged | Targets where items can be dropped |
Programs | Task folders Handler folders Unscheduled Programs / Phases folder |
Equipment Phases | Task folders Unscheduled Programs / Phases folder |
Routines | Programs Equipment Phases |
Tasks | Tasks folder |
Motion Group Axes | Motion Group folders Ungrouped axes folder |

Move items in the Controller Organizer
Drag-and-drop an item on another item. When you drop the item on the new parent item, the dragged item appears as a child item under that parent item. Note that if you drop the item on its own parent item, you create a copy of the dragged item.
- If the name of a moved item conflicts with the name of an existing item under that target item, an integer is added to the name of the moved item to uniquely identify it (ProjAProgR001, ProjAProgR0011, ProjAProgR0012, and so on).
- You can select multiple items of the same type to move (programs, Add-On Instructions, and User-Defined Data Types or Strings). The move operation proceeds if at least one item is legal to move (only the legal items are moved). If none of the selected items can be moved, the NOT cursor appears when over the target item.TIP: If FactoryTalk Security is enabled, FactoryTalk Security permissions are required to create and delete items in theController Organizerand theLogical Organizer. See Use FactoryTalk Security with the Logix Designer application
To scroll, expand, and collapse the organizer tree
You may want to drag-and-drop an item onto another item that is hidden, either because it is above or below the visible part of the tree in the organizer, or it is located in a collapsed branch of the tree.
To scroll up or down in the tree | Drag the selected item to the top or the bottom of the tree window. |
To expand a collapsed branch | Drag the selected item so that the mouse pointer is over the "+" (plus icon) for the collapsed branch. |
To collapse an expanded branch | Drag the selected item so that the mouse pointer is over the "- (minus) for the expanded branch. |
To drag from one organizer to the other organizer
You may want to drag-and-drop an item between the
Logical Organizer
and the Controller Organizer
. If the two organizers are "stacked," all that is visible for the second organizer is the tab at the bottom of the organizer window. To drag-and-drop an item to the other organizer, drag the selected item to the tab for the other organizer. After a second or two, the other organizer appears and you can continue to drag the item to the target item.Drag-and-drop cursors
Description | Cursor |

- You cannot drag a Safety item when in Safety Lock. If you select multiple items, and any of them is a Safety item, you cannot drag-and-drop any of the selected items in Safety Lock.
- You cannot use drag-and-drop operations if the system is in Hard Run or has a major fault.
- You cannot use drag-and-drop operations to copy a managed axis or a managed Coordinate System. When an axis or Coordinate System is associated to a robot, it might be managed, meaning some parameters are not configurable depending on the robot type. Refer to the specific robot documentation for a list of configurable parameters.
- You cannot paste a program if doing so would exceed the limit of 1000 child programs at the target item, or if it would exceed the limit of 1000 programs scheduled under a task.
