Configure 1756 Specialty I/O Modules

To configure your 1756 specialty I/O modules, you need to add the module to the Controller Organizer, and add ladder logic to your project. After module operation has begun, message instructions transfer the specific configuration to the module. All module features are configured, enabled, or disabled through the messaging portion of the
Logix Designer
application. The configuration data is then sent to the module under program control.
To configure a Specialty I/O module using ladder logic and message instructions:
  1. Create user-defined data types (via the Data Monitor Editor) and tags by double-clicking Controller Tags from the Controller Organizer.
  2. Use ladder logic to write configuration, check module status, or perform run time services by double-clicking on the MainRoutine portion of the MainProgram from the Controller Organizer.
  3. Once you have added a message instruction to the new rung, create a new Message Control tag for it by right-clicking on the question mark (?).
  4. Select the Create Tag menu item.
  5. Enter information for the new tag including the Name, Description, Tag Type, Data Type, Scope, and Style.
  6. When you have completed all message instruction information, send the new message instruction to the module by downloading the configuration to the owner-controller and module.
