What is FLEX I/O?

FLEX I/O is a flexible, low-cost, modular I/O system. It is designed for distributed applications that offer all of the functions of larger, rack-based I/O without the space requirements. You can independently select the I/O type to meet your application needs. The FLEX I/O system contains the following components:
  • Adapter
One adapter powers the internal logic for as many as eight I/O modules. You can meet changing system requirements without buying additional power supplies and communication adapters.
  • Terminal Base
You can remove and insert modules under backplane power without rewiring or disrupting your system. By combining your field wiring terminations and the I/O interface into the same location, you save time and money by making your system easier to troubleshoot and maintain.
  • I/O Module
The I/O module contains the bus interface and circuitry needed to perform specific functions related to your application.
The installation, wiring and maintenance costs of a FLEX I/O system are low due to the combination of a terminal strip and an I/O interface. You can use the terminal strip on the terminal base to directly wire your field devices. Direct wiring saves you:
  • Installation and testing time
  • Additional wiring and external terminal blocks
  • Control marshaling panel space
The FLEX I/O system meets future compatibility requirements that may arise. With the proper adapter, your system can communicate over the Remote I/O network, DeviceNet network or ControlNet network. You can add components as your system requirements change.
