Course Purpose

This is the third and last course for this package — Power System Modeling and Calculations.  This course addresses information required to perform a power system model implementation using dedicated software. Easy power will be used for the practical implementation.

Objectives

  • Perform correct data collection to model the power system
  • Perform load flow hand calculation, and easy power load calculation
  • Solve the short circuit calculation for three phases; phase to ground and phase to phase to ground
  • Calculate correctly the voltage drop for a distribution system
  • Evaluate the power factor
  • Perform dynamic motor start study for a large induction motor connected to the grid
  • Perform short circuit calculation using symmetrical components
  • Generate TCC curves for the relay protection coordination
  • Generate ARC flash reports and labels
  • Implement a ground grid for a substation
  • Understand the different types of grounding systems

  • Consideration of the charging capacitive current for a power system
  • Active and reactive power flow in a multiple utility system
  • Large motor starting voltage drop calculation
  • Medium Voltage circuit breaker sizing and complete parameters selections

Day 2

  • Case study of a large motor start and voltage compensation
  • Case study of a large motor starting from a backup generator
  • Conditions for paralleling power transformers
  • On Load and Off Load LTC
  • Switchgear types; ratings and sizing
  • Typical characteristics and delays in bus transfer schemes
  • ATS-Automatic Transfer Systems, fast and slow transfer
  • Short circuit manual calculation for a system
  • Overvoltage generated in distribution systems

Day 3

  • Insulation coordination, and requirements for cable; transformers and switchgears
  • Grounding systems for power equipment: solidly grounded; resistive ground; Peterson coil
  • Typical protection schemes for transformer protection
  • Relay protection schemes for power transformers
  • Buses and cable protection
  • Motor protection requirements
  • Generator protections systems
  • UPS supplied from Backup Generator requirements
